What Are The Different Types Of LED Lighting

Like a strip in the kitchen, like a candle in the living room or like a balloon in the garden, the LED bulb or LED lamp (โคม ไฟ led which is the term in Thai) is everywhere. More ecologically and energy-efficient, it can be declined in multiple ways.

Since its invention in 1879, the bulb had barely evolved for a whole century. It worked by passing a current through a tungsten filament, which then warmed and emitted light. The principle is the same as for some electric radiators or your usual hairdryer. Most of the electricity used was lost in the form of heat, and most of the main lighting bulbs consumed between 60 and 100 watts. Its useful life was about 1,000 hours of use.

LED, CFL, Filament: What Is The Difference

The introduction of compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL), invented in the late 1970s, has meant significant savings because they produce much less heat. The bulbs have a nominal power of between 10 and 20 watts, and last much longer, between 6,000 and 15,000 hours of use. They contain mercury, which emits ultraviolet rays under tension, which stimulates a fluorescent layer, which then emits white light. The presence of mercury makes them highly polluting and dangerous to health in case of breakage.

LED lighting, already known for small diodes in electronic devices, uses semiconductors that convert electricity into light. These bulbs are particularly efficient, for example, they count 9 watts for a 900 lumens bulb, the equivalent of a filament bulb of just under 75 watts. They also have an unmatched lifespan of up to 40,000 hours of use.

What Shapes Can LED Bulbs Take?

The LED technology, based on the assembly of small semiconductors, can take many forms but different from the street lamp (โคม ไฟ ถนน which is the term in Thai). The current trend is towards vintage light bulbs, with diodes produced in the form of filaments. These LED bulbs are reminiscent of the old filament bulbs, and the glass is often formed in various shapes or sizes to become true decorative elements.
